Questionnaire Response

Dennis Smook - La Verendrye

1. Why did you decide to run in the 2016 Manitoba election?

Coming from a small business background I know the difficulties and challenges that small business, farmers and all Manitobans face with high taxes and red tape under this NDP government. I sincerely enjoyed serving the residents of La Verendyre in my first term of office and I see this election as an opportunity to continue serving Manitobans and providing a better future for all.

2. What experience will you bring to complement your role as MLA?

I was first elected as the MLA for La Verendyre in 2011. In my first term I served as the PC Opposition Critic for Labour, Immigration, and the Workers Compensation Board.
My wife Gwen and I have owned and operated a local business for close to forty years.I am a strong supporter of the small business and agriculture sectors and believe they are key to a thriving local economy in La Verendyre. Prior to being elected MLA I also served as a trustee for the Boundary School Division and has a long history of service to the community.

3. Is there anything in particular you would like to change in our province? In your electoral division?

I truly enjoys serving the constituents of La Verendyre and will continue to be a strong voice in Legislature if re-elected. I look forward to being part of the PC team with a better plan for our province – a plan that will create new opportunities for Manitoba and La Verendrye residents to thrive and build a better future for all.

4. What key issue(s) / topic(s) would like to stand for in your role as MLA, and why is it important to you?

When talking with constituents they have identified the following issues:
Health Care: Excessive wait times; Closure of emergency rooms and a Shortage of personal care-home beds.
Infrastructure: Deteriorating Roads and Bridges
Lack of Cell Phone Service in La Verendrye; impacting public safety and economic development.

These issues are important in providing a safe and secure environment for those of us living and visiting La verendrye.

5. What is one thing in particular that you value about the electoral division that you wish to represent?

I was born, raised, educated, own and operate a business and continue to live in La Verendrye; giving me first -hand knowledge of the constituencies needs. La Verendrye offers great potential for families to call home and allow them as well as business and agriculture to thrive and prosper .

6. Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

I wish to thank all the constituents of La Verendyre for giving me the opportunity to represent them and work with Legislature to make Manitoba a better place to work and live.
I believe the Progressive Conservative Party offers the best solutions to move Manitoba’s social and economic status forward giving Manitobans a brighter future.
