Questionnaire Response

Greg Nesbitt - Riding Mountain

1. Why did you decide to run in the 2016 Manitoba election?

The retirement of Leanne Rowat as MLA for Riding Mountain presented an opportunity. I have always been interested in politics and followed closely the careers of PC MLAs from our area such as Rowat, Glen Findlay, Len Derkach and Harry Graham. After careful consideration, I entered a three-way nomination race last spring and subsequently was the choice of members. I believe my rural and business background allows me to understand the issues facing the constituency and Manitoba as a whole. If elected, I look forward to consulting with the constituents of Riding Mountain and conveying their views to the PC caucus and in the Legislature.

2. What experience will you bring to complement your role as MLA?

I have been a small business (newspaper) owner for nearly 40 years. With that comes experience in fiscal management. I also have great listening skills and the ability to get both sides of a story.

Besides volunteering in my community and in the area, I have had the opportunity to serve on both provincial and national newspaper boards, including terms as president. This has allowed me to learn the skills of working together with others for the good of the entire organization – teamwork that will be very important in the role of an MLA.

3. Is there anything in particular you would like to change in our province? In your electoral division?

Manitobans are looking for a fiscally responsible government, and a government that is open for business. Economic development is the key to increasing revenue for government to support social programs for all Manitobans.

4. What key issue(s) / topic(s) would like to stand for in your role as MLA, and why is it important to you?

Health care is number one. Many communities are suffering from a lack of doctors and nurses. Emergency rooms are closed and acute care services are not offered. This results in long drives or ambulance rides. As well, some residents are deciding to move to larger centres so they can have access to health care which is depleting our population. My number one priority is to work to stabilize health care in the riding by recruiting more doctors and nurses, and working on the construction of more personal care home beds. The health of our communities in the long term depends on offering health care to residents close to home.

5. What is one thing in particular that you value about the electoral division that you wish to represent?

I have lived, worked and invested in the Riding Mountain constituency for nearly 50 years. These residents, like most Manitobans, are salt-of-the-earth people whose forefathers helped build this great province. I value their work ethic and “get it done” attitude. I believe they are looking for a government with that same attitude.

6. Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

The Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba embraces my values of fiscal responsibility while protecting what Manitobans hold dear – quality health care, education and social programming. I am proud to be a member of the Brian Pallister PC Team.
