Jamie Moses - St. Vital

1. Why did you decide to run in the 2016 Manitoba election?

I love the St. Vital community and am committed to doing what I can to keep it vibrant, affordable, and the best place to raise a family. I live here with my wife Shannon and my daughter, Malika, and am an active member of the community as a board member on a number of community boards.

I want to keep building on the work Nancy Allan has done as our MLA. I want to ensure that we keep building St. Vital for the future – reducing class sizes in schools, creating more affordable child care spaces, more nurses and doctors working in our community, and fixing St. Vital roads.

 

2. What experience will you bring to complement your role as MLA?

I have the experience and skills to be an effective and compassionate MLA. I have a background in business. I work at Investor’s Group as a Senior Workforce Management Analyst, overseeing budgets and staffing for over 100 people.

I also have a background in agriculture, which is an important part of Manitoba’s economy and the food security of all Manitobans, urban and rural. I hold a degree in Agribusiness from the University of Manitoba and worked at the Canadian Wheat Board. I have seen first-hand how everyone benefits when we all work together.

Lastly, I am a dedicated father and community member. I have community leadership experience serving as a board member at the Glenwood Community Centre, the Glenwood School parent advisory council, the Barbara Mitchell Family Resource Centre, and the Open Access Resource Centre, an organization that provides communication devices to children with special needs. I know the importance of these types of community groups and I will work hard to maintain these services and supports.

3. Is there anything in particular you would like to change in our province? In your electoral division?

I want to make sure that our political representatives are more diverse. As a black candidate running in this election, I want to show that people from all backgrounds can and should participate in our political system.

4. What key issue(s) / topic(s) would like to stand for in your role as MLA, and why is it important to you?

We need to keep investing in infrastructure to improve St. Vital roads. The NDP $10 billion infrastructure plan will invest $250 million in Winnipeg roads. The Conservative plan falls $1.8 billion short over the next 6 years, which will set us back. Investing in infrastructure not only fixes our streets, but also creates good jobs.

We need to continue making healthcare more accessible to people in St. Vital. Our plan will double the number of Quick Care Clinics and increase the number of doctors and nurse practitioners working at them.

We need to keep investing in affordable daycare. The NDP’s plan will create 12,000 new spaces and keep our daycare fees among the lowest in Canada for families. Brian Pallister and the Conservatives have said they want to move to a private system that will double the fees for families. As a father, this is not the future I want for Manitoba. I will work for a province that supports parents and invests in a bright future for all children, no matter their families’ income.

5. What is one thing in particular that you value about the electoral division that you wish to represent?

The people of St. Vital are hard working and dedicated to our community. As a volunteer at the Glenwood Community Centre and the Barbara Mitchell Family Resource Centre, I’m proud that people in St. Vital volunteer and contribute to building a better community. I value the contributions that they make to their community centres and community organizations that help to make St. Vital a wonderful place to live. I am proud that our province invests in the organizations and services that make our communities strong.

6. Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

I have been knocking on the doors of St. Vital for months now and it has been an incredible experience. I care passionately about our community. I am honoured to have the support of our retiring MLA, Nancy Allan. I want to build on the work she’s done over the last 16 years for the people of St. Vital.

There is so much at stake in this election. I want us to continue to invest in St. Vital, reducing class sizes, hiring more nurses and doctors to work at our QuickCare clinics, building new daycares and fixing our roads.

Brian Pallister and the Conservatives have said they will cut half a billion dollars from the budget, putting funding for health care, education, and child care at risk.

The Bokhari Liberals have shown that they aren’t a credible alternative. Their policies don’t make sense, and they aren’t even running a candidate in every seat.

There is so much on the line for you and your family. We can’t risk cuts to our schools, clinics, hospitals, child care centres and infrastructure.

This election, the choice is clear—Pallister’s cuts, or our plan to keep building St. Vital.
