Questionnaire Response

Janna Barkman - Charleswood

1. Why did you decide to run in the 2016 Manitoba election?

I believe that every child deserves an opportunity. Working in the not-for-profit sector with youth who face barriers to employment and education, I believe that educational and employment programs must continue to develop and provide opportunities for our youth.

Manitoba is a wonderful place to live. Having completed two university degrees in Winnipeg, I want to promote the things that keep young people here – affordable education, jobs, and protecting social and natural spaces.

2. What experience will you bring to complement your role as MLA?

Growing up in the west part of Winnipeg, I have the knowledge and experience to fight for a healthy, safe and vibrant community.  I work daily on expanding opportunities for young people and understand the systemic barriers faced by people in achieving their potential.

3. Is there anything in particular you would like to change in our province? In your electoral division?

I am passionate about education, and share the NDP’s vision for stronger schools: adding more teachers, keeping class sizes small, and keeping post-secondary education affordable for everyone, not just the few. I know this is also important to Charleswood residents.

4. What key issue(s) / topic(s) would like to stand for in your role as MLA, and why is it important to you?

As your MLA, I would ensure that we invest in our roads, schools, recreation centres and child care to continue strengthening our community. I am also passionate about creating accessible outdoor spaces, and feel that we must keep the Harte Trail, off-leash dog parks and other green space available to residents.

5. What is one thing in particular that you value about the electoral division that you wish to represent?

I currently work at Fort Whyte Alive, and I think that all of the beautiful greenspace in Charleswood and the surrounding area is such an important asset that needs to be protected and preserved.

6. Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

I will ensure that the services families need are there for them. I know many people in the community are worried about how cuts and privatization promised by other parties will impact health, education and child care. I will protect and invest in these core services, because that is how we ensure a good life for Manitobans.
