Questionnaire Response

Jim Maloway - Elmwood

1. Why did you decide to run in the 2016 Manitoba election?

We need to continue the fight to improve the quality of life for Manitoba’s working families. We need to continue the much overdue work on repairing and restoring Elmwood’s road infrastructure. Our roads need to be repaired and the Louise Bridge
needs to be replaced. The City needs help in addressing the road repair deficit and the NDP are committed to record contributions the City for road repair. Tax reductions for working families will also be brought in by the NDP, which will help
out the families who need it most. We will continue supporting child daycare and are committed to 12,000 new daycare spaces.

2. What experience will you bring to complement your role as MLA?

Sometimes you have to fight for things that are important for your community. I have been fighting for local families my whole political life. People in Elmwood know that I represent their priorities and that I will continue to advocate for the projects and
services that will move our community forward.
I fought the closure of the Disraeli Bridge and worked with City Hall to keep it open and build a new bridge. I fought the closure of Kelvin Community Club and will continue to stand up for the Clara Hughes Recreation Park and facilities that our community deserves. Today, I am fighting to replace the Louise Bridge. I bring to the table my experiences in leading these important battles.

3. Is there anything in particular you would like to change in our province? In your electoral division?

We need to continue progress towards full employment with good jobs for working people. It is important to note that we have the lowest unemployment rate in the country, which would be at risk with the cuts and privatization opposed by other parties. We need to continue the work of improving our health and education systems with smart, strategic investments. Here in Elmwood we need continued improvements to our recreation facilities.

4. What key issue(s) / topic(s) would like to stand for in your role as MLA, and why is it important to you?

Our area has infrastructure challenges–the Louise Bridge replacement is an immediate concern, as are needed improvements to local streets. Good quality child care is also important to working families, which is why the NDP are committed to building 12,000 new spaces. We must also continue making life affordable to families, and the NDP will bring in a tax break for working and middle class families.

5. What is one thing in particular that you value about the electoral division that you wish to represent?

The residents of Elmwood and East Kildonan place a great value on an honest day’s work and being treated fairly by all levels of government in the pursuit of the things that matter to their community. I will continue to work hard on behalf of families in
Elmwood and I will advocate tirelessly for their priorities. It has been an honour to represent the people of Elmwood both as MLA and Member of Parliament every year since 1986, when I was first elected to the Manitoba Legislative Assembly. It would be a privilege to continue serving our community.

6. Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

It has been an honour to represent the people of Elmwood both as MLA and Member of Parliament every year since 1986, when I was first elected to the Manitoba Legislative Assembly. It would be a privilege to continue serving our community.
