Questionnaire Response

Jody Gillis - River East

1. Why did you decide to run in the 2016 Manitoba election?

I have always been drawn to roles where I can use my experience and skillset to help others. As a teacher, I help my students realize their dreams and careers. As an MLA, I will listen attentively to my constituents’ concerns and work tirelessly on their behalf. I find it very rewarding to hear the issues and concerns of people in my community and I see many areas where we can make positive change together. There is a lot at stake in this election. I wanted to step up to help protect the important public services that the NDP have done well to grow and establish.

2. What experience will you bring to complement your role as MLA?

I have a wide range of experience, including information systems design, business process improvement, and pensions and insurance. I am also an educator. From working with learners with disabilities and teaching Business Information Technology at Red River College, I am driven to help other people find success. I find it very rewarding applying my experience on a variety of boards and committees as well. I know I can make a positive impact in River East and will deliver the professional representation that our community deserves.

3. Is there anything in particular you would like to change in our province? In your electoral division?

I will work to continue to make post-secondary education more accessible to all Manitobans – whether it’s part-time, full-time, college, university or continuing education. We were just named one of the top seven smartest communities in the world. We are moving Manitoba forward already, and can take advantage of this opportunity by helping more people achieve their dreams through quality, affordable education.

4. What key issue(s) / topic(s) would like to stand for in your role as MLA, and why is it important to you?

I stand for health care. I am proud to represent the party that is committed to doubling the number of QuickCare Clinics — including two new clinics right here in Northeast Winnipeg. QuickCare Clinics help take the strain off hospital emergency rooms, and give families a quick and convenient option for medical care.

I also believe that education is the great game changer for people, their families, and their communities. As an educator, I see first-hand every day the difference that quality, affordable education makes in people’s lives. I know I can bring my experience to the table to ensure a bright future for all Manitobans.

5. What is one thing in particular that you value about the electoral division that you wish to represent?

We have a great sense of community. People still say “hi” when they pass on the street or at one of our many great parks. This is something we should continue to foster. I think that more community events could get even more people talking and working together in River East.

6. Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

People in River East have a wide variety of issues and concerns. It has been a great experience learning about what matters most to people. Healthcare, education, and childcare have emerged as dominant issues in the many great conversations I’ve had.

I will work hard to create and maintain connections throughout our community, and my aim will be to best represent everyone in River East.
