Questionnaire Response

Kathleen McCallum - Steinbach

1. Why did you decide to run in the 2016 Manitoba election?

Manitobans are friendly, warm and generous and we truly care about our neighbours and people in our communities.  It is important that our elected representatives reflect these values and support programs that ensure that no one is left behind, and everyone matters.

2. What experience will you bring to complement your role as MLA?

I have experience working in the government, so I know how the decision-making process works. Also, I have a lot of volunteer experience and understand what local organizations require from their representatives.

3. Is there anything in particular you would like to change in our province? In your electoral division?

The cuts being proposed by Conservatives will put the services families depend on like health and education at risk. I will stand up for these services so that families continue to get the care they need and so that young people get the education they need for a bright future.

4. What key issue(s) / topic(s) would like to stand for in your role as MLA, and why is it important to you?

Keeping life affordable for young families and seniors alike through measures such as a new tax break for working and middle class families, the lowest cost utility bundle in the country, and the seniors school tax rebate. Investing in infrastructure and growing the economy so that our young people have good jobs.

5. What is one thing in particular that you value about the electoral division that you wish to represent?

The constituency has embraced and welcomed new immigrants in large numbers. Steinbach recognizes their important social and economic contribution.

6. Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

It is important and integral to the democratic process that people step up and put their name forward to run.  If elected, I will sit down with community leaders to discuss how we can build on the investments the NDP government has already made in the community in education, health care and recreation.
