Questionnaire Response

Tom Nevakshonoff - Interlake

1. Why did you decide to run in the 2016 Manitoba election?

Whether I’m pushing for stronger flood protection, helping farmers in his area or managing water and wildlife resources across our province, I put everything I have into getting the job done for the people of Manitoba and the Interlake. I will continue to work closely with all stakeholders on the ongoing flood mitigation work for Lake Manitoba and Lake St. Martin in partnership with local communities. Addressing the issues of climate change is also one of my top priorities.

2. What experience will you bring to complement your role as MLA?

I was raised in the communities of Poplarfield and Fisher Branch, and was first elected as MLA for Interlake in 1999.  In April 2015, I was appointed Minister of Conservation and Water Stewardship, and have been working with the federal government and neighboring jurisdictions to build Manitoba’s plan to fight climate change

3. Is there anything in particular you would like to change in our province? In your electoral division?

Our NDP government has delivered on our commitment to invest in infrastructure like highways, bridges and flood mitigation. There is still more to do, and every dollar we invest in these projects brings many more into our provincial and local economies.

4. What key issue(s) / topic(s) would like to stand for in your role as MLA, and why is it important to you?

Access to health care for rural Manitobans is a paramount concern. That’s why we have invested locally to ensure this service is there when people need it. We purchased 18 new ambulances in the Interlake region, opened a dialysis unit in Hodgson and just announced a 120 bed Personal Care Home upgrade in Arborg.

5. What is one thing in particular that you value about the electoral division that you wish to represent?

The natural environment and the wonderful people who live here. I will work to bring more flood protection to communities that need it, more economic development and jobs into the Interlake, and work to protect our environment so that my grandchild can enjoy Manitoba like I have.

6. Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

I am the only candidate that can be counted on to invest in the services that families need. While other parties are talking about cuts and privatization, the Manitoba NDP is committed to ensuring important services like health, education, child care and seniors care are there for families.
