Portage la Prairie candidates Q&A

April 11, 2016

Winnipeg Free Press - The Headliner contacted candidates in the April 19 provincial election to answer questions for voters. Below are responses from Morris candidates Alex MacDonald (NDP), Stephen Prince (Liberal) and incumbent Ian Wishart (PC). Alex MacDonald (NDP).

Questionnaire Response

Alex MacDonald - Portage la Prairie

1. Why did you decide to run in the 2016 Manitoba election?

I decided to run because I am concerned about the reckless agenda Brian Pallister is proposing. I moved to Manitoba because of the affordability of this province and the availability of jobs. The platform put forward by Pallister and the PCs would make life less affordable and will cut jobs in the province.

2. What experience will you bring to complement your role as MLA?

I bring experience as a community organizer. I am young and energetic and able to work with people in the constituency to bring their issues forward in the Legislature.

3. Is there anything in particular you would like to change in our province? In your electoral division?

I would like to see a more community focused province where we are engaged in making life better for our neighbours. I believe there is nothing better than committing yourself to work hard for the betterment of others.

4. What key issue(s) / topic(s) would like to stand for in your role as MLA, and why is it important to you?

I will stand up for agricultural producers in our province. I had previously worked in value-added sectors in agriculture and would like to focus on creating an environment where Manitoba’s farmers have opportunities to maximize the sustainability and growth of their business.

5. What is one thing in particular that you value about the electoral division that you wish to represent?

I value the hardwork of people in my constituency. Families here aren’t living in lavish $2 million mansions, they are just focused on working hard and providing a good life for their families. Keeping hydro and insurance rates low, maintaining affordable childcare and protecting our healthcare system from privatization are things I will fight for so that people’s lives are affordable.

6. Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

I just want to add that it has been an honour to be a candidate in this election. I have learned a great deal in just the candidacy and hope to be able to work for everyone in Portage la Prairie if elected on April 19.
