Questionnaire Response

Dave Chomiak - Kildonan

1. Why did you decide to run in the 2016 Manitoba election?

I have been fortunate to represent this community for 25 years now and I have seen the constituency grow and flourish. I want to continue the good work that has already been done, and continue to build our area. When I speak to the students in the area I encourage them to get involved in their community and in the world. I explain that you can do anything, big or small, that can make the community a better place, from helping a friend to volunteering. Tommy Douglas always said “You can’t do everything, but you can do something”. I truly believe that, and am proud of what we have been able to accomplish together.

2. What experience will you bring to complement your role as MLA?

Being the MLA for the last 25 years, I’ve door-knocked on every door in the riding countless times. I know the people of Kildonan, they are my friends and neighbours. I’ve been in cabinet since 1999, holding many different portfolios. I understand how government works, and since 1999 I’ve had an open and accessible community office so people in the constituency can always find me to share their concerns or ideas.

3. Is there anything in particular you would like to change in our province? In your electoral division?

We have made record investments into our Seven Oaks Hospital and our NDP government built a quick care clinic on Jefferson to better serve the healthcare needs of the community. I would like to see more investments made in these types of projects to bring the best healthcare possible to serve our area.

4. What key issue(s) / topic(s) would like to stand for in your role as MLA, and why is it important to you?

When I talk to the people of Kildonan in the grocery store or on the door step, I hear a lot about the priorities for the community. They tell me that healthcare, childcare, education and investments in infrastructure are the key issues that matter to them and their families. It is my job as their representative at the legislature to ensure these investments continue to be made.

5. What is one thing in particular that you value about the electoral division that you wish to represent?

Our diversity. Growing up in the north end I remember when this community was primarily Ukrainian, Jewish and Polish families. I door knock now and I see so many people from so many different walks of life, so many different cultures and backgrounds. On any given street in the area I can go door to door and run into someone who identifies as Ukrainian, Polish, Jewish, Filipino, East Indian, French, or any number of other backgrounds. This is incredible, and shows the strength of our community. We work together to get things done. The people of our area volunteer constant hours at schools, community clubs, rinks and churches. They do not complain, and instead try to solve problems.

6. Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

I’m honoured and excited to be asking the people of Kildonan to support me again. I feel we have accomplished many things, but there is more to do!
