Michelle Finley - St. James

1. Why did you decide to run in the 2016 Manitoba election?

The decision to enter politics did not happen over night for me. I have known since about 2006 that I wanted to enter politics. The seed was planted when I worked with Habitat for Humanity Winnipeg. I worked closely with low-income working families and it opened my eyes to the struggles that many Manitoba families face. My time at Habitat for Humanity inspired me to want to make things better for people. For the past 10 years, I have planned my career and personal interests around gaining the experience I feel a good politician should have.

2. What experience will you bring to complement your role as MLA?

My time with Habitat for Humanity and working with Jon Gerrard at the Legislature, allowed me to work closely with people who were struggling to get ahead. Both jobs taught me to listen more effectively and approach each person’s unique problem or issue with compassion and empathy.

My current role with the City of Winnipeg has provided a variety of opportunities to excel at working in an environment that is changing from hour to hour and also allowed me to develop strong skills in how to effectively work with different stakeholder groups and populations. I think this is a valuable skill for an elected official to have.

3. Is there anything in particular you would like to change in our province? In your electoral division?

I am very passionate about poverty reduction because I started my life in poverty. I believe poverty is the single biggest issue this province has. It impacts every single government service and department.

Most people think St. James is an affluent neighbourhood but there are thousands of people living here that are either living in poverty or very close to it.

I would like to focus on increasing affordable housing for all ages and abilities. I also want to ensure that there is quality childcare available as soon as parents want to return to work following the birth or adoption of a child, or if they need to enter the workforce for any reason.

 

5. What is one thing in particular that you value about the electoral division that you wish to represent?

I really value the open spaces and parks in St. James. I think having so many green spaces makes for a healthier neighbourhood and also makes for a stronger sense of community.

I am also thankful for our recreation facilities and our community clubs. There is something special about the volunteers in St. James that keep our local clubs open and thriving.

And you cannot live in St. James and not value Sargent Sundae.
