Questionnaire Response

Rochelle Squires - Riel

1. Why did you decide to run in the 2016 Manitoba election?

To make a difference in our community and ensure we are creating a better Manitoba for our future generations.

2. What experience will you bring to complement your role as MLA?

Apart from having a diverse background as a journalist and covering many stories from the Legislative building, I believe my family has provided me with a strong foundation for serving my community. From my early days as a single mother living in poverty and struggling to find adequate housing and food, to a working mom trying to find child care, to now, where many of those hurdles are in the past, I am very passionate about giving back to others. I would provide a strong advocacy for people living in Riel who are paying too much in taxes and looking to a future where our young people want to stay and live and work in Manitoba.

3. Is there anything in particular you would like to change in our province? In your electoral division?

Jobs and the economy are essential for keeping our young people at home here in Manitoba. I also know first hand the role that government plays in helping those in need of a hand up. I would be a strong advocate for those struggling to obtain provincial government programs and services. This includes working toward a better plan for reducing wait times in health care and improving our education system so our young people can receive a world class education right here at home.

4. What key issue(s) / topic(s) would like to stand for in your role as MLA, and why is it important to you?

Riel is a very diverse community, and I would strive to represent the entire riding, which includes people with varying abilities and income levels.

Trust is also a big issue and I would be honoured to be given the opportunity to keep my promises made to the constituents of Riel.

5. What is one thing in particular that you value about the electoral division that you wish to represent?

Riel is home to me and I value the opportunity to call the constituents of this riding my friends and neighbours. I have lived in Riel since I moved to Manitoba in 1994, and my husband Daniel Brunet has lived here his entire life. Our five children have gone to schools in the riding and much of our free time as a family is spent in parks and bike paths in the area. As an avid runner, I also appreciate the river trails around my home in the southern part of Riel.

But the one thing I value the most about the electoral division of Riel is the people. They are second to none and among the best people I know.

6. Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

I am truly honoured to represent the Progressive Conservatives in Riel and have enjoyed every day on the campaign trail. I’d like to thank the hundreds of people who have invited me into their homes to share their thoughts and concerns with me, and who are believing in me and the entire PC Team to help make a better Manitoba.
